Gender & sexuality based bullying in schools- Free event 16 March
Hi all,
Please see below FYI and please forward through your networks Gender and Sexuality Based Bullying in Schools is a serious issue. You are invited to attend an Equal Opportunity Commission sponsored morning tea with: Donna Cross (2011 Australian of the Year) Tiffany Jones (published author and researcher in the area of sex health & society) and; Roz Ward (co-founder of Safe Schools Coalition Victoria), exploring gender & sexuality based bullying in schools. The morning tea will be held on the National Day of Action Against Violence, 16 March 2012, at the Atrium Theatrette, 4/168-170 St Georges Terrace from 10am – 11.30am. Limited places register your attendance now to this informative and FREE event now! Just log onto http://www.trybooking.com/19475 School is meant to be a safe environment for young people to learn and grow. However, research shows that this is not often the case for sexuality and gender diverse students. School was identified as the most dangerous place for GLBTI young people in the “Writing Themselves In 3” report, the most recent and largest national survey of GLBTI young people in Australia, with 80% of same-sex attracted youth who had experienced homophobic abuse identifying school as the most common place of abuse; an increase from 69% in 1998 and 74% in 2004 (Hillier et al. 2010). More than ever, it is time to address this serious issue. I strongly urge policy makers, principals, teachers & school psychologists to participate in this important and transformative conversation with these three speakers who bring a wealth of knowledge to the serious issue of gender and sexuality based bullying and discrimination in our schools. As a member of the Equal Opportunity Commission’s Steering Committee Challenging Sexuality and Gender Diverse Bullying and Discrimination in Schools, the Youth Affairs Council of Western Australia strongly supports the introduction of statewide specific anti-homophobic and anti-transphobic bullying and discrimination policy across all schools.
